If you’ve already lodged your tax return and receive Centrelink payments, tax return details might not be final just yet. Many Australians are unaware that their Centrelink payment information can change after the financial year ends, which may require action.

Why Your Centrelink Payments Tax Return Might Change?

Each year, Services Australia provides your Centrelink payments tax return summary to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). However, these summaries are sometimes updated after July 1. Reasons for this include:

  • Payment adjustments due to back payments, overpayments, or recalculations.
  • Timing issues where income earned in June is processed after June 30.
  • Reconciliations after updated income or family details are submitted to Centrelink.

When this happens, you may receive a letter from Centrelink or Services Australia advising of a change in your reported income or payment details.

What Happens If You Already Lodged Your Tax Return?

If your Centrelink payments tax return was lodged before receiving the update, you must amend your tax return. Failing to do so may result in:

  • A tax debt if you underpaid due to inaccurate income reporting.
  • Delays in future tax refunds or processing of government payments.
  • Potential penalties for unintentionally submitting incorrect information.

How to Check for Changes

Before amending, compare the new information from Centrelink to your ATO pre-filled tax return data. Most updates are automatically sent to the ATO and reflected in your online myGov account.

Steps to take:

  • Log in to your myGov account linked to the ATO.
  • Open your submitted tax return and check for any updated Centrelink details.
  • Match the updated data with the letter you received.
  • Use the ATO online amendment service or contact a registered tax agent to amend your tax return.

When You Don’t Need to Amend Your Tax Return?

In some cases, your Centrelink payment summary may be updated, but it does not affect your tax outcome. If your letter says no action is required, you’re in the clear. However, it’s always best to verify the change using ATO pre-fill data to be certain.

Tips to Avoid Future Amendments

To avoid having to amend your Centrelink payments tax return in the future:

  • Wait for your payment summary to be finalised before lodging.
  • Double-check pre-fill data in your ATO tax return matches your Centrelink letter.
  • Speak with a tax professional if unsure about your situation.
