NEXTDC, the popular data centre operating company in Australia, is set to manufacture the first-ever data centre in the NT region. The organization has recently bought a piece of land in Darwin from the Northern Territory government.

The data centre providers also confirmed on Monday that they’ll be developing a Tier-III facility in the NT. NEXTDC, which had 11 other data centres all over Australia prior to this one, will call this new project the “mission-critical operation centre.” The code for the mission is “D1”.

During the whole year of 2020, the NT government implemented a process called Expression of Interest (EOI). The purpose of the process was to find a suitable developer for the proposed data centre in the suburb of Wishart. And they’ve found it in the form of NEXTDC.

The territory government has been really active in recent times. Their purpose is to build significantly on the recent investments in the terabit territory campaign. The NT government also wants Darwin to be the data hub of Australia in the future.

Michael Gunner, the Chief Minister of NT, commented on the issue:

“We’re excited to work with NextDC to build this world-class data centre in Darwin. We want to make the Territory a hub for digital industries and investment, and now we can look forward to building infrastructure that will create new jobs and opportunities.”

Telecommunication company Vocus will help NEXTDC in providing high-intensity connectivity to D1. They’ll also improve connectivity on the terabit territory network fibre. Vocus will remain a major adversary throughout the creation of the data centre.

Craig Scroggie, the CEO of NEXTDC, has also shared his delight with the latest development of events. He told the media:

“The company is honored to be selected as the government’s strategic partner to work together to continue to strengthen the territory’s digital industry. This digital infrastructure development represents an important investment for the NT, that will further support and accelerate the growth of the northern digital gateway in Australia.”

Vocus has been very active of late in distributing their cables throughout Australia and beyond. Currently, they’re deploying the Australia-Singapore cable, and the Geraldton-Port Hedland cable in Western Australia. This new NEXTDC data centre will support and benefit Vocus’ efforts to spread the digital fever in Australia.
