Apple announced on Monday that it plans to open a new campus in Raleigh, North Carolina area.
Apple will spend more than $ 1 billion on campus, and will employ 3,000 people working in technology services including software engineering and machine learning.
Expansion
The campus is a sign of Apple’s continued growth beyond its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where most of its engineering is based. Apple’s $ 1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, is expected to open next year.
The Apple extension will be located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, which gets its name from nearby North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina.
Apple CEO Tim Cook and COO Jeff Williams have MBAs from Duke. Apple’s vice-president Eddy Cue, who oversees the company’s online services, graduated from Duke.
“As a North-Carolina native, I’m very excited that Apple is growing and creating long-term job opportunities in the community in which I grew up,” Williams said in a statement.
Wider Pool Of Talents
Apple is joining other Silicon Valley technology companies that are expanding outside the Bay Area to gain access to a vast pool of technological capabilities and to address high housing prices and other living costs in the region.
For example, Oracle announced plans last year to relocate its headquarters to Austin, Texas.
Mountain View-based Google is spending $1 billion on a new campus in New York City and is redeveloping a former shopping mall in Los Angeles. Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, has 1,600 employees out of a planned 25,000.
Employment And Job Creation
Apple also said Monday it was growing rapidly in other cities where it has engineering jobs. It plans to employ 5,000 people in San Diego, 3,000 in Culver City, Los Angeles, and 700 in Boulder, Colorado, by 2026.
Apple has also said it employs 1,000 people in Seattle, and plans to double that. In all, Apple said it plans to add 20,000 jobs to the United States over the next five years.
However, Apple will continue to settle in Silicon Valley, where it has about 25,000 employees, including 12,000 employees at its loop-shaped headquarters. Apple said last year it had 147,000 full-time employees, including retailers.
