Rex Airlines has announced major changes to its regional flight network across Victoria and Tasmania, with several routes set to be suspended or reduced due to rising fuel costs.

The Australian carrier confirmed on Friday that a number of services connecting regional communities to Melbourne will either stop operating completely or see reduced frequency from late June. The decision is expected to impact passengers who rely heavily on regional air travel for business, tourism, and essential connectivity.

According to the airline, flights operating between Melbourne and Devonport, as well as services connecting King Island to Burnie, will cease operations from June 20. Rex stated that increasing operational expenses, particularly fuel prices, have placed significant financial pressure on regional aviation services.

In addition to the route cancellations, the airline also revealed that weekly flight frequencies on several existing routes will be reduced from June 22. These include services between Melbourne and Mildura, Burnie, and King Island. The changes are aimed at helping the airline manage costs while maintaining a limited level of service on affected routes.

Regional communities are likely to feel the impact of these cuts, especially areas that depend on consistent air connections for tourism and commerce. Businesses in Tasmania and regional Victoria may also experience disruptions, particularly during peak travel periods.

Rex Airlines has faced financial challenges over the past year alongside broader pressures affecting the aviation industry. Rising fuel costs, inflation, and increased operational expenses have continued to affect airlines globally, with regional carriers often hit the hardest due to smaller passenger volumes and limited route profitability.

Passengers with existing bookings on affected routes are expected to be contacted by the airline regarding alternative arrangements, refunds, or schedule adjustments. Customers are advised to regularly check flight updates and travel notices before planning trips.

The airline has not ruled out future adjustments to its network, suggesting that ongoing market conditions and fuel prices will continue to influence operational decisions in the coming months.

Despite the cuts, Rex says it remains committed to supporting regional Australia and will continue operating across many key destinations nationwide while working to stabilise its regional services.
