If you’re thinking of applying for the Centrelink Age Pension in 2025, here’s good news. The recent changes by the Centrelink will allow more Aussies to qualify for this support.

The Centrelink Age Pension is the main income support payment for people who have reached the Age Pension age and meet certain financial and residency requirements.

The rising inflation in the country has made the Age pension more important than ever for helping older Australians.

What is the Centrelink Age Pension?

The Centrelink Age Pension helps older Australians with regular payments who are no longer working full-time. The support helps cover everyday expenses like groceries, rent, medical bills, and utilities.

To receive the Centrelink Age Pension, one must meet three key rules:

  • Be at least 67 years old (this changed from 66.5 years in July 2023).
  • Pass the income and assets test.
  • Be an Australian resident for at least 10 years, with 5 years continuous residency.

What Changed for the Centrelink Age Pension in 2025?

The Australian government updates the income and assets test limit twice a year.

Income Test:

  • Singles can earn up to $212 a fortnight and still receive a full Age Pension.
  • Couples (combined) can earn up to $372 a fortnight to get the full payment.
  • Higher income may still allow you to receive a part Age Pension.

Assets Test:

Homeowners

  • Single: Full pension if assets are below $314,000.
  • Couple (combined): Full pension if assets are below $470,000.

Non-homeowners can have slightly higher limits

If your income or assets are over the thresholds, your pension payment will be reduced, or you may not qualify.

Higher Age Pension Rates in 2025

Centrelink Age Pension payment rates also increased from 20 March 2025:

  • Single: $1,149.00 per fortnight.
  • Couple (each): $866.10 per fortnight.

These amounts include the basic pension, pension supplement, and energy supplement, helping retirees manage rising living costs.

The adjustment of the Centrelink Age Pension eligibility rules and income/asset limits means that more Australians now meet the criteria in 2025.
