An image of a rodent optic nerve head has been awarded first prize in the 2023 photomicrography competition.
The image was created by Hassanain Qambari and Jayden Dickson from The Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Western Australia, using confocal and fluorescence microscopy.
The image provides an important contribution to the study and reversal of diabetic retinopathy, which affects one in five people with diabetes worldwide.
Since 2021, Mr Qambari has devoted his time and research to the early detection and reversal of the disease that can cause vision loss and blindness.
The Nikon Small World competition has been celebrating the beauty in the teeny-tiny for almost 50 years, with this year’s competition attracting more than 1,900 entries from 72 countries.
The entries were judged on their originality, informational content, technical proficiency, and visual impact.
