Previously priced at $12, the iconic Woolworths roast chicken can now be purchased for a wallet-friendlier $10.90 until August 29. Matt Harbich, the chief chook officer at Woolworths, expressed the unforeseen reduction was intended to support Australians grappling with escalating grocery costs amidst the cost of living predicament.
He shared with news.com.au, “We are pleased to lower the cost of our roast chickens to $10.90 for a restricted period, providing added value to our customers this week.”
“We have been vending hot roast chickens in our outlets since 1960, and they have consistently remained a beloved choice among our customers.”
The roast chickens, a fundamental item in Australian households, have experienced fluctuations in their price point over the past few years.
In May, Woolworths elevated the cost of its roast chickens to $12 – marking the initial price increase since February 2022. However, this adjustment left shoppers disheartened, as they criticised the essential grocery product for being costly.
Coles’ roast chickens retained the price of $11 for a brief duration, yet the supermarket has now aligned its price with that of its rival. Both Woolworths and Coles reduced the cost of their roast chickens from $11 to $8 in 2015.
