The festive season is well and truly upon us, but for many Australians, it’s been far from a merry start to the holiday period. As 100 firefighters battle an out-of-control blaze near Perth, parts of Victoria are bracing for serious flooding.
Despite the proximity of Christmas, some parts of Australia are still facing temperatures below the December average, thwarting plans to bask in the summer sun.
100 firefighters are battling multiple blazes around Perth, and due to the hot and dry conditions forecasted for the coming days, multiple bushfire warnings have been issued as there is an increased risk of fire.
Residents of Henderson and Wattleup in Kwinana have been instructed to evacuate due to a bushfire that is rapidly spreading and endangering lives and homes in Perth’s southwest.
One of the worst floods in 70 years is being experienced in Mildura and the surrounding towns in the far north of Victoria.
After months of warnings, the Murray River has peaked in Mildura; although not as high as expected, there are still warnings that the river won’t recede until January. Meanwhile, last week Melbourne experienced its coldest December morning since 2001.
Canberra experienced its coldest December morning since 1992, significantly lower than the average monthly temperature.
So far this December, there have been no days reaching above 30C in Canberra, which is unusual as it usually records more than seven days above this temperature.
In Sydney, temperatures have not topped 30C yet and the average maximum temperature has not gone beyond 25C.
With just a week to go before Christmas, Australians are urged to pay close attention to the weather forecasts and stay informed about the risks associated with floods and fires. It is also advisable to plan ahead and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
For those who are travelling during this period on holiday, make sure to check the weather before you go. Be aware of the potential hazards and be prepared to change your plans if the situation becomes too dangerous.
