A popular ice cream brand has been recalled from major supermarkets in Australia over contamination fears.
Häagen-Dazs ice cream, which is sold at popular retail groups such as Coles, Woolworths, and IGA, has been immediately recalled over the presence of potential toxic chemical ethylene oxide.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has warned the supermarkets to stop selling ice cream after the regulator found the chemical, which could affect our health.
As per the food regulator agency, Haagen-Dazs’ Vanilla 457ml and Häagen-Dazs Classic Collection Mini Cups 4 x 95mL contain ethylene oxide, which is considered to be carcinogenic.
The gas is flammable and used to produce antifreeze. The toxic chemical is also used for pesticides or a sterilising agent.
Flammable gas is a serious threat to our health. The consumption of ethylene oxide could lead to nausea, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat, breathing difficulty, drowsiness, weakness, exhaustion, eye and skin burns, blurred vision, frostbite, and reproductive effects.
As per FSANZ, the recalled ice creams with the best before dates between July 4 and July 21 should be immediately returned by the consumers to the place of purchase for a full refund.
