Every year, millions of Americans tune in to watch the Super Bowl championship. The game was viewed by almost 90 million people in the US alone last night. The annual sports event is also a massive advertising avenue for companies across the world.
Many viewers in fact, just join to enjoy the half-time show that is graced by A-list celebrities or the part where ads are played. This year, many crypto firms made their debut at the Super Bowl by paying huge sums of money for an advertisement slot. One among such crypto companies was Coinbase.
The Bouncing QR Code
The Coinbase ad was so popular and unique that the influx of traffic crashed the whole app of the company. The ad was minimalistic as well. It was a bouncing QR Code on the screen for the entire 60 seconds the ad was played.
When the viewers scanned the QR code, they were directed to Coinbase’s promotional website that would enable the viewers to register for $15 worth of Bitcoin and enter a giveaway that had prizes worth $3 million in total. However, the inflow of traffic was so high that the systems of Coinbase crashed.
Coinbase Goes Mainstream
The Super Bowl ended with LA Rams winning over the Cincinnati Bengals on 14 February but guess what? For Coinbase, the Super Bowl ended with 20 million added customers in their database.
Now, the crypto firm has announced it will hire 2,000 extra staff in 2022 to cater to the customers. The company has not specified exactly which roles and departments would it be hiring across. But we for sure know one thing after last night’s game: The demand, craze, and potential for cryptocurrencies is MASSIVE!
Apart from the Coinbase ad, another standouts was a commercial for Amazon’s Alexa digital voice service, which featured Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost. The commercial imagines what might happen if Alexa had the ability to read people’s minds and broadcast what they are thinking.
