Tonga coach and Australian rugby player Toutai Kefu says he has been discharged from the hospital and is “doing well” now.
It comes after he was violently attacked by intruders at his Brisbane home.
Kefu Thanks Well Wishers
The 47-year-old World Cup winner was stabbed along with his wife and two children when they disrupted a burglary on Monday morning.
“It is humbling to see the outpouring of love and good wishes from family, friends, community members and everyone of you at large,” Kefu wrote on his Facebook wall.
He also said: “Josh, Madi and I are not in the hospital and we hope that Rach (Kefu’s wife) will be able to join us tomorrow. We just want to say thank you for everyone’s support and we feel very lucky and grateful.”
The Suspects
Kefu suffered a deep abdomen injury, and his wife Rachel suffered serious injuries to her arm. Josh, 21, and Madi, 18, were also attacked violently by the intruders.
Police arrested two teenagers in the case and are currently on search for a third suspect who had fled in a stolen car.
The suspects allegedly left an ax, a knife and a machete at the scene.
Rugby Career
Kefu has won 60 Test Cups in Australia, scored 10 tries, and was part of the Wallabies team that won the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
Social media users, including former team members and colleagues had changed their profile pictures to a green and gold number eight – which was Keffu’s position in his playing days – as news of the attack spread.
Kefu coached Tonga, his native country, at the 2019 World Cup and was re-appointed to the job earlier this year.
