An emergency nurse in the United States was diagnosed with COVID-19 eight days after receiving the vaccine.

A California ER nurse working at two San Diego hospitals, known as Matthew on social media, received the Pfizer vaccine on December 18, according to a post posted on Instagram.

“I got the COVID vaccine!” he wrote.

“The 15 minutes afterwards sitting around with a bunch of others while healthcare workers asked us how we felt made me think of an opium den. I’ll report back if I start to grow a third arm.”

After The Vaccine

However, Matthew began to feel sick a week before Christmas with the cold, muscle pain and fatigue after working shift in one of the COVID-19 units in the hospital, he told ABC 10 News.

On December 26, he was tested for coronavirus, reports The Daily Mail.

Why Is This Not Surprising?

Dr Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers in San Diego, told the network that it was not surprising and said the result was not something “unexpected”.

“It is not unexpected at all. If you work with numbers, this is exactly what we would expect to happen when someone is exposed, ”he said.

Dr. Ramers added that Matthew might had been infected with the coronavirus before he was vaccinated.

“We know from clinical trials that it will take about 10 to 14 days to start developing protection from this vaccine,” said Dr Ramers.

The doctor added that he was aware that some cases of health workers became infected when they received the vaccine.

“That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50 per cent, and you need that second dose to get up to 95 per cent,” Dr Ramers said.

Vaccine Development In Australia

Matthew said his symptoms have improved and he feels better.

Meanwhile, Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine program is underway as authorities continue to monitor global rollout.

Acting acting chief medical officer Paul Kelly told reporters Wednesday that the vaccination program was “in place”.

“We are continuing with all those stages of preparation, including the purchase of vaccines, to ensure that the retrenchment comes when it needs to be here, that our regulators continue to work at this time and look forward to more information from both AstraZeneca and Pfizer in the coming days,” he said.

Professor Kelly said there was not yet a “complete authorization” anywhere in the world with the COVID-19 vaccine, and only emergency use occurred in other parts of the world where it was needed.

“They are very limited and we are now a few weeks into that situation in the UK, in the US and other places,” he said.

“(We look closely) at what is happening, first and foremost, with the release plans and how they work, which we can learn from but especially any safety concerns that may arise with these growing numbers of mishaps given in other parts of the world. ”

Professor Kelly said the Therapeutic Goods Administration will conduct a quick but comprehensive examination.

“People should trust this regulation here in Australia, especially for safety but also for the quality of these brand new vaccines,” he said.
