Boxing Day Splurge Faces Challenges amidst Rising Cost-of-Living Pressures

As the Boxing Day sales approach, Australian shoppers are gearing up for a spending spree, with an anticipated splurge of $23.9 billion, according to recent forecasts from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).

However, amidst the festive cheer, there is a contrasting tale of restraint and frugality emerging, as continued cost-of-living pressures prompt many to reevaluate their gift-giving and holiday spending habits.

The ARA’s fresh forecasts, released just days before the much-awaited shopping extravaganza, paint a dual picture of consumer behaviour.

On the one hand, there is optimism as post-Christmas spending, stretching up to January 15, is projected to surge by approximately $400 million compared to the previous year.

This suggests that retailers might witness a boost in sales during this period, with shoppers keen on snapping up bargains and taking advantage of the year-end discounts.

Forecasts indicate that department stores are poised for the most substantial growth, with an anticipated increase of 4.8 percent.

Other sectors within the retail industry are also expected to see positive sales growth, with clothing forecasted to rise by 3.4 percent and food retailing to experience a 2.8 percent upswing.

However, as consumers adopt a more frugal approach, expenditure at cafes, bars, and restaurants is projected to decline by 3.3 percent, equating to a decrease of $116 million.

Paul Zahra, the Chief Executive of ARA and former head of David Jones, expressed optimism that the approaching Boxing Day sales are poised to yield encouraging outcomes for retailers, even in the face of challenging economic conditions.

Customers can anticipate attractive deals as retailers take steps to sell off stock, particularly for items that may not have met expectations during the Christmas period,” he remarked.
