Australia’s fuel reserves have climbed to their highest level since the start of the US-Iran conflict, offering reassurance to motorists and businesses despite ongoing global supply concerns.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Saturday that the country now has a record 6.5 billion litres of fuel across all fuel types. The milestone comes as the government continues to strengthen Australia’s fuel security amid uncertainty in global energy markets.
According to the government’s latest weekly fuel update, 55 fuel ships carrying approximately 3.2 billion litres of fuel are scheduled to arrive over the next four weeks. These incoming shipments are expected to further reinforce Australia’s fuel supplies as international tensions continue.
Speaking about the latest figures, Albanese said the current stock levels exceed those recorded at the beginning of the conflict.
“What that means is that we currently have six and a half billion litres of fuel in Australia in total across all fuel types, which continues to be more than we had at the start of this conflict,” he said.
The Prime Minister described the achievement as the highest level of fuel held in Australia since the government introduced its fuel stockholding system.
“This is the highest total amount of fuel in Australia since we introduced our fuel stockholdings, highest ever,” Albanese said.
He added that Australians should feel confident in the country’s fuel security measures, saying the government has worked to ensure stable supplies despite global disruptions.
However, Albanese cautioned that the situation remains uncertain as the US-Iran conflict continues to affect international fuel markets.
“I’ll say again, we remain at level two, so we ask Australians to just take what fuel you need, no more but no less also,” he said.
The government’s advice aims to prevent unnecessary panic buying while ensuring fuel remains available across the country. Officials continue to monitor international developments closely and will provide regular updates on Australia’s fuel supply as the situation evolves.
With additional fuel shipments already on the way, Australia is currently in a strong position to manage potential disruptions. Nevertheless, authorities are urging the public to use fuel responsibly until global conditions become more stable.
