Centrelink payments cancelled illegally

A shocking new analysis has revealed that over 300,000 Australians had their Centrelink payments unlawfully cancelled. This between 2020 and 2024, raising serious concerns about systemic failures in the welfare system.

The cancellations, which affected recipients of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment and more, were linked to flaws in the mutual obligations compliance regime and automated decision-making systems.

What Happened With Centrelink Payments?

The report found that Centrelink wrongly suspended or cancelled welfare payments due to compliance errors, unfair obligations, and technical issues in its automated systems.

Advocacy groups say the system punished vulnerable people unfairly, cutting off income support for those already struggling with the cost of living.

Many of those affected faced severe financial hardship, with some forced into debt, housing insecurity, and food stress.

Calls for Accountability and Reform

Social security advocates and welfare rights organisations are demanding:

  • Compensation for the 300,000+ Australians affected
  • A full independent investigation into the compliance system
  • Stronger human oversight to prevent future unlawful cancellations

“This is Robodebt 2.0,” one advocate said, comparing the scandal to the government’s illegal Robodebt scheme, which unlawfully recovered billions from welfare recipients before being scrapped.

Government Response

The federal government has acknowledged the findings and confirmed a review of Centrelink’s compliance framework is underway.

The mutual obligations scheme has already been paused in 2025 following earlier revelations of unlawful suspensions and IT failures. Officials say reforms are being designed to ensure the system is “fair, lawful, and transparent.”

Why This Matters

For many Australians, Centrelink payments are a lifeline. The unlawful cancellation of income support not only breaches legal rights but also deepens poverty and inequality at a time when living costs are rising sharply.

Advocates warn that unless reforms are fast-tracked, hundreds of thousands of people remain at risk of further unlawful actions by the system.

  • The errors were linked to mutual obligations and automation flaws.
