If you’re wondering how much Rent Assistance you can get from Centrelink in 2025, this guide explains the latest payment rates, eligibility rules, and how to make sure you’re getting the maximum support available.

What Is Rent Assistance?

Centrelink’s Rent Assistance is a non-taxable payment designed to ease rental costs for eligible low‑income Australians. You automatically qualify when claiming benefits like JobSeeker, Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, ABSTUDY, Youth or Austudy Allowance, Parenting Payment, or Family Tax Benefit A—and paying rent above a set threshold.

How Is the Payment Calculated?

  • Fortnightly rent threshold: You must pay more than the minimum amount (e.g. $149.60 for singles).
  • Top-up rate: For each dollar above the threshold, you get 75 cents.
  • Maximum cap: Once your rent reaches a ceiling (e.g. $432.27 for singles), you max out the benefit.

2025 Rate Summary (Paid with income‑support or ABSTUDY)

Household TypeRent Threshold (fortnight)Rent Ceiling (fortnight)Max Assistance
Single$149.60$432.27$212
Single, sharing$149.60$338.05$141.33
Couple$242.40$508.80$199.80
Family with 1–2 children (Family Tax Benefit A)$290.36$622.63$249.20
Family with 3+ children$290.36$665.75$281.54

Rates last updated 20 March & 1 July 2025, aligned with CPI and ABS data.

Campaigns & Recent Boosts

  • Since March 2025, the maximum Rent Assistance for singles has hit $212 per fortnight and for couples $199.80, reflecting indexation.
  • Over 45% cumulative increase since May 2022, including a 10% uplift in Sept 2024.

When Do Payments Change?

Updates occur twice yearly, on 20 March and 20 September and are automatically applied. Also, changes in your rent, living arrangement, or income may alter your payment, so timely reporting via myGov or Express Plus is important.

Who’s Eligible and Who Isn’t?

You can’t get Rent Assistance if you:

  • Own or are buying your home (except relocatable homes)
  • Live in public housing or aged care
  • Receive an allowance with a partner already claiming the payment
  • Live in Commonwealth-funded aged care facilities

How to Apply & Maximise

  • No separate claim needed, Centrelink auto‑checks when you update your rent details or apply for a qualifying payment
  • Keep records – supporting lease or certificate may be requested.
  • Report every change – especially rent hikes, new partner, or moving house.

Why It Matters in 2025?

A recent Guardian report found logistics of rent assistance now cover less than 20% of median rents, with many still struggling.

While payment boosts help, experts warn it’s insufficient amid ongoing rental pressure and lack of continued federal budgeting for further enhancements.
