From June 12, 2025, a new Australia Post repayment rule will come into effect. You must pay at least $5 to make a debt repayment over the counter at Australia Post.
This new rule means if you visit an Australia Post branch to make a payment towards a Centrelink debt or other government-related debt, the minimum repayment allowed will be $5 or more.
This applies to payments made using cash, cheque, credit card, or EFTPOS.
Why is Australia Post Changing the Minimum Repayment Amount?
The change has been introduced by Services Australia to reduce processing of small transactions and encourage more people to use digital repayment methods. It’s part of their effort to make government services faster and easier to manage.
Who is Affected?
Anyone who uses Australia Post to make in-person debt payments will be affected. If you usually make small repayments, you’ll need to make sure each payment is at least $5 starting June 12.
What Payment Methods are Not Affected?
Good news: the following payment options are not affected by the $5 minimum repayment rule:
- Centrelink online account (using Visa or Mastercard through “Money You Owe”)
- Direct debits
- BPAY
- Post Billpay online
These methods remain flexible, and you can pay amounts less than $5 if needed.
What You Should Do Now
If you usually make small repayments in person at Australia Post, consider switching to an online repayment method. It’s often quicker and more convenient. You won’t be limited by the new $5 rule if you pay online or through BPAY.

Make sure you update your repayment habits before the 12 June 2025 deadline to avoid any issues.
How the New Australia Post Repayment Rule Helps You Manage Debts?
The latest Australia Post repayment rule will let the Aussies know how to manage debts. Be it Centrelink or government debts, planning wisely would help with any issues.
Using online options, you can avoid delays and keep payments on track.
