As the Tasmanian state election draws nearer, the political landscape is heating up, with candidates vying for attention and support. Among them, Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has taken an unconventional approach to campaigning, making waves with a colossal billboard etched into a paddock, dwarfing even the grandeur of Melbourne’s iconic MCG.
Jeremy Rockliff, a former farmer turned politician, has always had a penchant for thinking outside the box. Harnessing his rural roots and agricultural connections, Rockliff enlisted the help of a friend to plough his campaign slogan, “2030 Strong Plan,” into a sprawling paddock located on his mother’s farm in Tasmania’s picturesque northwest.
The eight-hectare paddock required over an hour to plough, employing GPS technology commonly utilised in precision agriculture to ensure accuracy. The slogan, spanning approximately 250 metres, consists of letters measuring around 40 metres in length and 20 metres in width each.
A spokesperson for the campaign remarked that the billboard is a suitable representation for a “down-to-earth” Premier.
“The usual Australian political campaign launch entails a cramped conference room, flooded with bright lights, a prominent stage, and booming music,” the spokesperson remarked.
“However, such a setting doesn’t align with Jeremy’s preferences. Hosting the event at the farm where Jeremy spent his formative years, opened by his mother Gerry, felt like the ideal choice.”
Mr Rockliff maintained the farming motif as he arrived at his campaign launch on Sunday, opting to ride the very same tractor that was utilised in creating the billboard.
