Transgrid and Endeavour Energy: 1000 Workers Strike in Pay Dispute

More than 1000 workers are set to stage a significant protest on Thursday, as they walk off the job for 24 hours due to an ongoing pay dispute with two of the east coast’s prominent power companies.

The Electrical Trades Union (ETU) finds itself embroiled in a tense confrontation with the major players in electricity transmission and distribution, namely Transgrid and Endeavour Energy. The crux of the matter revolves around the workers’ demand for a fairer remuneration package that keeps pace with inflation.

This move signals a critical juncture in the ongoing saga between the workers and the power companies. The ETU, representing the interests of the workforce, has made it abundantly clear that unless a satisfactory agreement on wages is reached, they are prepared to escalate their industrial action.

The looming spectre of more severe disruptions underscores the seriousness of the impasse.

“We will escalate industrial action until these employers consent to engage in discussions and reach an agreement on a pay package that acknowledges the escalating cost of living,” stated Allen Hicks, Secretary of the ETU NSW.

“The agreement we seek for our members will assist energy sector workers in bridging the gap. Inflation is being managed, and it is imperative that workers receive fair treatment.”

The union is advocating for an annual increase of 8 pence in wages over a span of three years. They assert that wages at Endeavour have surged by 10.5 percent since 2019 and by 8 percent at Transgrid, whereas inflation has soared by 18 percent during the same timeframe.

At the start of January, the union turned down a proposal from Transgrid for a 13 percent rise spread over three years. Instead, they initiated action across the company’s array of assets, encompassing transmission lines, high-voltage underground cables, substations, switching stations, and digital infrastructure responsible for distributing electricity to over three million residences and businesses throughout NSW and the ACT.

Endeavour Energy oversees the electrical network extending from Ulladulla in NSW’s Shoalhaven region to Waterfall and western Sydney.

The strikes pose a threat to Transgrid’s prominent $2.3 billion EnergyConnect transmission line project linking South Australia and NSW. Mr Hicks remarked that Thursday’s action would disturb operations at the green energy initiative and extend its backlog for maintenance.
