Australia’s universal health system, Medicare, is set to undergo a subtle but meaningful change this year as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The alteration comes in the form of a commemorative design that will be featured on all Medicare cards printed throughout the year, marking a major milestone for the nation’s healthcare system.
Health Minister Mark Butler expressed the significance of the commemorative design, stating that it serves as a way to celebrate Medicare as an integral part of the lives of all Australians. The new design, while largely similar to the existing one, symbolises the enduring strength and accessibility of the country’s universal health coverage.
The commemorative design is set to be a subtle yet impactful addition to the familiar blue and white Medicare cards that Australians carry.
Individuals eligible for a card replacement will receive the new design automatically upon card expiration. Those desiring the special edition can make a request or access the Medicare Express Plus app, where the digital version will be updated automatically.
Government Services Minister Bill Shorten characterised the new card as an opportunity to carry “a small piece of history” in one’s wallet.
“If you have delayed updating the details on your Medicare card, now is an excellent opportunity to make those changes,” he remarked.
The card’s format will stay consistent, featuring a modest “40-year anniversary” emblem in the top left corner and a subtle adjustment to the Medicare logo in the top right. The background has been streamlined, with the watermarked backdrop reduced to cover less than half of the card in a simpler design.
On February 1, 1984, Medicare was implemented to assist in financing the healthcare expenses of Australians, following the disassembly of Labor’s initial universal health scheme, Medibank, by the Fraser government.
In the past year, the government initiated its initial measures towards revamping the system, aiming to alleviate strain on hospitals and enhance the affordability of primary care.
