In response to the ever-increasing demand for e-commerce services, Australia Post has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art parcel facility that embodies innovation and efficiency.
The $75 million facility, sprawling over 14,000 square meters and nestled conveniently next to Avalon airport, north of Geelong, stands as a testament to Australia Post’s commitment to evolving with the times and ensuring that the country’s iconic government-owned postal service remains a vital part of the nation’s retail landscape.
The colossal parcel facility comes with a remarkable capability to process a staggering 40,000 parcels daily, providing a much-needed boost to the efficiency and capacity of Australia Post’s operations.
What’s more, the facility is designed with an eye on the future, as it can be expanded to handle up to 60,000 parcels a day, offering a scalable solution that can readily adapt to the surging e-commerce demand.
Australia Post’s Chief Executive, Paul Graham, lauds the inauguration of this mega-facility as a pivotal step to keep the cherished postal service “fit for purpose.”
With an ever-increasing number of Australians turning to online shopping as their preferred method for retail therapy, it has become imperative for Australia Post to revamp its operations and rise to the occasion.
“This contemporary facility represents a significant milestone for Australia Post and a crucial investment in our future as the eCommerce sector continues to expand,” Mr Graham said.
“Its proximity to Avalon airport and access to vital transportation connections will guarantee the efficient delivery of our services through our extensive network.”
The prominent retailer, Cotton On, established at the adjacent Avalon industrial park, has entered into a fresh two-year partnership with Australia Post to distribute eCommerce orders to its customers nationwide.
Andy Sanderson, the General Manager for Group Distribution at Cotton On, stated that the Avalon centre would expedite deliveries, ensuring customers receive their desired items precisely when and where they need them.
The newly established centre is equipped with a tier-two large parcel sorting system, offering parking facilities for as many as 14 semi-trailers and providing 92 indoor van bays.
Notably, the centre features state-of-the-art automated sorting machines capable of efficiently processing over 5,000 large parcels per hour. In addition to servicing the eCommerce sector, the facility is positioned to accommodate the increasing demand in the Greater Geelong area, one of the two most rapidly growing regions in rural Australia.
