26 year old Australian golfer Cameron Davis has claimed his maiden PGA tour victory, in a thrilling playoff shootout with American, Troy Merritt.
Missing a short par putt on his 16th hole, Davis needed to clutch up if he was a chance to win the tournament, finding himself two back from the lead.
Short-sided in the greenside bunker on the Par-5 17th, Davis holed a miraculous bunker shot, bouncing off the pin and dropping in for Eagle.
Needing a birdie on the last to tie the lead, Davis’ bomb down the fairway resulted in a 156 yard approach to inside 8ft, where he calmly rolled the putt in for birdie.
With Niemann out in the first playoff hole with his first bogey all week, it took 5 holes between Merritt and Davis before a winner was decided.
“It has been pretty hectic ever since 17th hole for me,” Davis said greenside after the win. “I don’t know, I just tried to put as much out of my mind as I could and just hit every shot for what it was worth.
“As simple as that sounds, it’s so hard to do once the pressure is on. I just kept trying to make good swings on it.
“I guess I didn’t make any putts but I kept putting it in play so I guess it worked out alright.
Coming after his ’ 71st start on the US PGA Tour, Cameron Davis pocketed a cool $1,350,000 (A$1.8m) for the victory.
Another of his most impressive shots of the week, was his driver off the deck to set up an eagle putt in the final round.
