Facebook has started showing ads in its Oculus virtual reality headsets even though the platform’s founder told previously that he would never do that.
Virtual Reality Ads
What the social network is trying to describe as an experiment, user will see the ads appear in the game called Balston with other developers putting out similar ads.
It is said that the company would be listening to user feedback for the launch of more virtual reality ads and only proceed after proper data.
It turned out to be that the company also plans test of a new ad format that is unique to VR.”
‘We Are Not Going To Flash Ads At You’
In march of 2017, shortly after Facebook bought Oculus, a developer, Palmer Luckey told me the Following: “We are not going to track you, flash ads at you, or do anything invasive.”
But in a blog post on the Oculus web site, the company said, “We are trying to learn new ways to generate revenue for the creators – this is a very important element in order to make sure that we are building a resilient platform with a variety of business models that can lead to new types of content”
Users will also be able to hide a specific advertisement, or promotion of any particular advertiser, and Facebook has announced that its privacy policy will continue to be the same as it was.
How Will It Work?
“Facebook will get new information, like whether you interacted with an ad, and if so, how… for example, if you clicked on the ad for more information or if you hid the ad.”
It encourages customers to share their opinions on the Oculus support center from the web site.
Last month, the company began testing ads in the Oculus mobile app.
Leo, an analyst at CCS Insight, said that the move was not a surprise.
“Ultimately Facebook is built on advertising revenue and if there was any expectation that it wouldn’t build it out into virtual reality, then that is a little naive.”
This could mean that Facebook is still the dominant player in it, because the others will not be able to compete.
“The long-term goal is for Oculus to be a platform for virtual reality and augmented reality, with Facebook keen to get as many people as possible using it,” he said.
