President Joe Biden has cancel and nullified his predecessor Donald Trump’s executive order to ban Chinese app TikTok and WeChat in the united states.
The ban during Trump’s era faced a series of legal challenges and never came into force as a matter of fact.
Instead, the US Department of Commerce will now review apps designed and developed by those in “the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary”, such as China.
US National Security
It should be based on a ‘science and evidence-based method”, in order to see if they pose a threat to U.S. national security, Mr. Biden said.
Tiktok did not comment on the story developments.
The Background
Mr. Trump has ordered a ban on the new downloads of the viral video app TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, in the year of 2020.
He called it a “threat to national security”.
A call was made to Oracle and Walmart to take control of the Tiktok’s US service and assume responsibility for the processing but a deal did not make through.
However, there were a number of legal issues, and the fact that shortly after that Mr. Trump were to leave office.
What’s Happening Now?
In his new executive order, the President Joe Biden has clearly said the federal government will have to assess the potential risks with the software through a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis”.
He admitted that the program can “get access to a large amount of information of the users.”
“This data collection threatens to provide foreign adversaries with access to that information,” he said.
TikTok is used by about 80 million Americans each month.
Mr Gorsky, the chief counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), has welcomed the decision to lift the ban.
The General Trade, the Ministry of education and other programs, it should not lead us to the same false-means, usually, like the veil of the future of the ban, or any other illegal activity.”
