Facebook Crosses $1 Trillion Market Cap After Winning Lawsuit In Court

Facebook’s stock market value has surpassed $ 1 trillion for the first time ever after the technology giant won in the court over U.S. regulators.

The court dismissed two lawsuits, from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and US states, which sent Facebook shares up by 4.2%.

What Did The Court Rule?

It has taken Facebook’s value above $ 1tn, making it the most recent and last addition in the ‘top five” technology companies to hit the milestone.

Legal actions have blamed Facebook of preventing competition.

But Judge James Boasberg ruled that the FTC’s complaint against the communications giant was not clear and coherent.

Another separate anti-competition lawsuit filed by the 46-state groups was rejected because as per court the allegations of breach occurred very long ago.

Legally Insufficient

In a U.S. District Court, Judge Boasberg wrote that the FTC’s appeal was “legally insufficient” and should be dismissed, as the FTC “failed to provide sufficient facts” to support its claim that Facebook oppresses the competition in the industry .

The FTC has asked for the technology company, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, to be split.

“The FTC’s complaint says almost nothing concrete on the key question of how much power Facebook actually had, and still has, in a properly defined anti-trust product market,” wrote Judge Boasberg.

‘Monopolist’

“It is almost as if the agency expects the court to simply nod to the conventional wisdom that Facebook is a monopolist.”

While this is a punch for the FTC in the face and some analysts stro ly believe that it could have consequences for the future of anti-competition law in the US, the watchdog can re-file the charges and has until 28 July to do so.

However, investors saw it as an important victory for Facebook, sending the share price higher. The values of the other tech giants – Apple, Google-owner Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon – have already topped $1tn.
