Prince Harry Faces Potential $1.4 Million Bill as Libel Case Against British Newspaper Abruptly Dropped

Prince Harry finds himself in the midst of legal complexities as he abruptly withdrew his libel case against Associated Newspapers, the owner of the Mail on Sunday, just days before a scheduled trial.

This unexpected move has sparked speculation and raised questions about the reasons behind the prince’s decision.

Scheduled for Friday, the day Prince Harry was set to hand over a substantial collection of documents, the withdrawal of the libel case has left many wondering about the content of those papers and their potential impact on the trial.

The documents could have played a crucial role in determining the outcome of the case, making their sudden withdrawal all the more intriguing.

While the specifics of the case remain undisclosed, legal experts suggest that the prince’s decision to drop the case may have significant financial implications.

He initiated legal proceedings in response to an article published in the Mail in February 2022, which occurred following a disagreement with the UK’s Home Office concerning the security arrangements for the royal.

The articles alleged that the Duke of Sussex’s public relations team attempted to manipulate the Home Office dispute by asserting that he had volunteered to personally cover the costs of police protection.

The Home Office countered, stating it had not received any such offer at the time. Prince Harry’s legal team sought a favourable ruling from High Court judge Matthew Nicklin without proceeding to trial, but the request was dismissed.

The Mail disclosed Prince Harry’s decision to withdraw the case.

“The report stated, “Today marked the deadline for both parties to reveal a list of any pertinent documents.”

“Instead, at 10:06 am on Friday (9:06 pm ADST), Prince Harry’s legal team notified the newspaper that they had submitted a notice to the court declaring, “The Duke of Sussex discontinues all aspects of this claim.”

The publication indicated that Prince Harry, aged 39, is expected to cover the newspaper’s costs amounting to £250,000 ($481,000), in addition to his own legal expenses, with the estimated total surpassing “more than £750,000 ($1.44 million).”

The prince, who has experienced a tumultuous relationship with the media, holds the press accountable for the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana. She died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while attempting to evade paparazzi.
