From Saturday, 20 September 2025, millions of Australians will receive a boost to their regular Centrelink payments. The adjustment is part of the government’s twice-yearly indexation process, which ensures pensions and other benefits keep pace with inflation.
More than five million people. including pensioners, carers, parents, and job seekers, will see the September 2025 rise flow directly into their bank accounts.
Which Payments Will Increase in September?
Not every payment is changing, but the following benefits will go up this month:
- Age Pension
- Carer Payment
- Disability Support Pension
- JobSeeker (for people aged 22 and above)
- Parenting Payment
- ABSTUDY (for recipients 22 and over)
- Commonwealth Rent Assistance
How Much Extra Will Recipients Get?
The exact increase depends on the type of payment. Here’s what the September adjustments look like:
- Age Pension, Carer Payment and Disability Support Pension: singles will receive an extra $29.70 per fortnight, while couples combined will see an additional $44.80.
- JobSeeker: singles over 22 without children will get a $12.50 boost per fortnight.
- Parenting Payment: single parents will receive an extra $16.20 every fortnight, while partnered parents will see a rise of $11.40.
- Commonwealth Rent Assistance: small increases of around $3.20 to $3.40 depending on household type.
For example, a single person on the full Age Pension will now receive just under $1,180 every two weeks, while a single parent on Parenting Payment will get just over $1,039.
When the Changes Take Effect?
The payment increases begin on 20 September 2025. Eligible Australians don’t need to do anything — the new rates will be applied automatically and show up in the next scheduled payment.
Why Centrelink Payments Are Increasing?
The government adjusts Centrelink benefits in March and September each year to ensure people relying on support are not left behind as living costs rise.
These increases are calculated using:
- Inflation through the Consumer Price Index
- Wage growth data
- The Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index
This means payments such as the Age Pension, JobSeeker and Parenting Payment hold their real-world value as essentials like groceries, rent and fuel become more expensive.
What Australians Should Keep in Mind?
While most recipients will notice a positive change, not everyone will see the same outcome.
- Some part-rate pensioners may find their payments adjusted downwards due to updated deeming rates.
- Not every type of Centrelink payment is indexed this September.
- The increases are gross amounts, so individual circumstances like income tests, assets or tax may affect final payments.
What This Means for Households?
The September 2025 Centrelink increases provide welcome relief for Australians doing it tough.
- Pensioners will receive a noticeable lift in their fortnightly payments.
- Job seekers and parents will see a modest but helpful boost.
- Renters will benefit from slightly higher Rent Assistance.
Even small increases can make a difference in household budgets, especially as living costs remain high across the country.
